4-Day Pare Mountains Trekking

Overview

The Pare Mountains rise above Same town in northeastern Tanzania, a quiet range that sees a fraction of the visitors of Kilimanjaro or the Usambaras nearby, despite genuinely rewarding trekking and a strong community-tourism setup. This 4-day trip starts from Same (105km from Moshi, 185km from Arusha, reachable by public bus or private car) and works through Mbagga village, Chome village, and the climb to Shengena Peak (2,463m), the range's highest point, with home-stay or hostel accommodation and local guides throughout.

This is a genuinely different kind of Tanzania trip, community-based, on foot, with real cultural exchange built in rather than a wildlife safari or a high-altitude summit push. If you're looking for something similar in a different part of the country, our 3-Day Magoroto Forest Getaway offers a comparable slower-paced, nature-and-culture focused trip in the East Usambara Mountains.

Tour Highlights

  • Genuine community-based trekking, home-stay or hostel accommodation in Mbagga and Chome villages
  • Summit Shengena Peak (2,463m), the highest point in the Pare Mountains
  • Waterfalls and a hike to Malimeni rock near Mbagga village
  • Pare cultural traditions: Namoche cliff, the holy forests, Chome waterfall, and traditional dance with storytelling
  • A Maasai bomas visit near Same on the final day
  • A quiet, low-traffic alternative to Tanzania's better-known trekking routes

Same Town to Mbagga Village

After breakfast and a general briefing at Elephant Motel in Same town (500m above sea level), you'll travel by public bus or private car to Mbagga village (around 1.5 hours by bus, 1 hour by private car). Once there, the afternoon and evening are spent exploring the area on foot: a waterfall visit and a hike to Malimeni rock, before returning to Tona Lodge in Mbagga village for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approx. 1-1.5 hours from Same town, plus an afternoon of local walking and sightseeing

Activity: Travel to Mbagga village, waterfall visit and Malimeni rock hike

Accommodation: Tona Lodge, Mbagga village

Meals: Dinner

Day 2

Mbagga Village to Chome Village

Departing Tona Lodge (1,500m) after breakfast, the day's main activity is the hike itself, around 6 hours, climbing steadily to Chome village (1,900m). Accommodation here is home-stay or hostel, giving a closer look at daily life in the Pare Mountains than a standard lodge would.

Distance: Approx. 6 hours hiking

Accommodation: Home-stay or hostel, Chome village

Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3

Shengena Peak Ascent

An early 5am departure from Chome village for the climb to Shengena Peak (2,463m), the highest point in the Pare Mountains, around 6 hours up and 4 hours back down. Lunch is served at Chome village on your return. Depending on your preference, you can spend a third night in Chome village or descend by private car to Same for the night at Elephant Motel instead. If staying in Chome for the evening, the area offers further cultural activities: a visit to Namoche cliff, the holy forests, Chome waterfall, and traditional Pare dance with storytelling that shares local history.

Distance: Approx. 6 hours ascent, 4 hours descent

Activity: Summit Shengena Peak (2,463m), optional evening cultural activities in Chome village

Accommodation: Home-stay or hostel, Chome village (or Elephant Motel, Same town, if descending by car)

Day 4

Chome Village to Same Centre & Departure

An early morning departure from Chome village to Same Centre for a Maasai culture and bomas visit, around 3 to 4 hours, before driving back to Elephant Motel for lunch. After lunch, you'll continue on to Moshi or your next destination, marking the end of the Pare Mountains trek.

Distance: Approx. 3-4 hours for the Maasai bomas visit, plus transfer to Same and onward travel

Activity: Maasai bomas visit, then transfer to Same and departure

Accommodation: N/A, end of trek

Meals: Lunch

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this trek?

This trip involves real hiking days, particularly Day 2 (around 6 hours to Chome village) and Day 3 (roughly 10 hours combined for the Shengena Peak ascent and descent). No technical climbing is involved, but reasonable hiking fitness and comfort with multi-hour days on foot are important. This is more demanding than a typical day trip but considerably less extreme than a Kilimanjaro summit attempt.

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation is genuinely local: Tona Lodge in Mbagga village on Day 1, then home-stay or hostel accommodation in Chome village for Days 2 and 3 (or a return to Elephant Motel in Same town if you choose to descend by car after the Shengena Peak climb). This is part of what makes the trip a real community-tourism experience rather than a standard touristic trek.

When is the best time of year for this trek?

The Pare Mountains are generally trekkable year-round, though the rainy seasons (April-May and shorter rains in November) make trails muddier and the Shengena Peak ascent more demanding underfoot. The dry season (June to October, and January to February) offers more comfortable hiking conditions.

What's included in the price?

The price covers public bus transport from Moshi to Same town, Same to Mbagga village, and from Chome village back to Same Centre on the final day, village fees for all areas visited, three meals a day, accommodation (Tona Lodge in Mbagga village, home-stay or hostel in Chome village), Shengena Natural Reserve fees, guide salary, the Maasai bomas visit, and lunch at Elephant Motel in Same to close out the trip. Private vehicle transport (rather than public bus) between Moshi/Arusha and Same, and between Same and Mbagga village, is available; ask us for details. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Can we use private transport instead of public buses?

Yes, private vehicle transport between Moshi or Arusha and Same town, and between Same and Mbagga village where the trek begins, can be arranged in place of public bus travel. Let us know your preference when booking.

Is this trip suitable for families with children?

Given the multi-hour hiking days, particularly the Shengena Peak ascent, this trip suits older children and teenagers comfortable with extended walking rather than young children. Let us know ages in advance and we can advise on what's realistic, or discuss adjusting the itinerary.

What's the cultural side of this trip like?

This is one of the trip's main draws. Beyond the trekking itself, you'll visit Namoche cliff and the holy forests around Chome, see Chome waterfall, and take part in an evening of traditional Pare dance with storytelling that shares local history, alongside a Maasai bomas visit near Same on the final day. The home-stay and hostel accommodation in Chome village also gives a genuine window into daily life in the Pare Mountains.

What about travel insurance?

Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended for all multi-day trekking trips in Tanzania, including this one. While Pare Mountains trekking doesn't carry the altitude risks of a Kilimanjaro climb, insurance covering medical evacuation is still sensible given the trip's distance from major towns.
