Quick facts
Wildlife
Arusha itself is an urban environment, but Arusha National Park — 25 km from the city centre — provides immediate access to giraffe, buffalo, colobus monkey, hippo in the Momella Lakes and tree-climbing lions. The city is surrounded by the ecosystems that feed the world's greatest wildlife destination: Kilimanjaro and Meru to the east and north, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro a few hours west. The Meserani Snake Park near Arusha offers close-up encounters with Tanzania's venomous species for educational visits.
Top activities
Arusha National Park half-day: canoe safaris, giraffe walks and Ngurdoto Crater rim. Cultural Heritage Centre — Tanzania's best curated African art, jewellery and safari gear shopping complex. Meserani Snake Park: reptile education and Maasai cultural museum. Arusha Declaration Museum and Clock Tower — the city's colonial and independence history. Restaurant and coffee scene: Arusha produces excellent single-origin Arabica coffee. Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro briefing and gear hire. Maasai market visit on the city outskirts.
About Arusha
Arusha is where Tanzania’s safari story begins. Sitting at 1,400 metres above sea level at the foot of Mount Meru, exactly halfway between Cairo and Cape Town (a fact celebrated by the city’s famous Arusha Declaration monument), this city of roughly 1.7 million people is the operational heart of the Northern Circuit: the base from which most Kilimanjaro climbers begin, from which most Serengeti and Ngorongoro safaris depart, and through which most international visitors to northern Tanzania pass at least twice.
Despite its reputation as a transit stop, Arusha rewards time spent. The city has a vibrant cultural and culinary scene, a remarkable concentration of safari expertise, and immediate access — 25 km from the city centre — to Arusha National Park, one of Tanzania’s most underrated wildlife areas.
Getting to Arusha
Most international visitors arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which handles direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), Nairobi (Kenya Airways and others) and various European charter routes during peak season. The airport is 50 km from Arusha city centre, about a 45-minute transfer.
Arusha Airport (ARK) is a smaller airfield 7 km from the city, handling domestic and charter flights to Serengeti, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and the park airstrips. Most safari departures from Arusha use ARK rather than JRO.
Things to do in Arusha
Cultural Heritage Centre
Tanzania’s finest curated collection of African art, sculpture, jewellery and safari equipment under one roof. Not a tourist trap — the quality of the art collection is genuinely exceptional, sourced from across East Africa. Worth 2–3 hours on arrival or departure. The restaurant is good.
Arusha National Park
A 25-km drive brings you to one of Tanzania’s most diverse small parks: canoe safaris on the Momella Lakes, giraffe walks, Ngurdoto Crater rim views and Meru climbing trails. A perfect half-day or full-day option for pre- or post-safari use or for Kilimanjaro climbers acclimatising at altitude.
The Arusha Declaration Museum
Tanzania’s national history museum, covering the country’s colonial history, the independence movement and the legacy of Julius Nyerere’s ujamaa socialism. The museum is modest in scale but well-curated and worth 90 minutes on a rainy afternoon.
Meserani Snake Park
Thirty kilometres west of Arusha, the Snake Park houses Tanzania’s main collection of live reptiles — including black and green mamba, puff adder, Egyptian cobra and Nile crocodile. Adjacent is a Maasai cultural museum. Good for families and anyone curious about the species they might encounter in the bush.
Coffee and restaurants
The Kilimanjaro and Meru slopes are Tanzania’s main Arabica coffee growing regions, and Arusha has embraced specialty coffee culture with genuine quality. Several cafes in the city roast locally sourced beans in-house. The restaurant scene has diversified significantly in recent years — Ethiopian, Indian, Lebanese, Italian and pan-African options complement the standard safari-lodge fare.

Frequently asked questions about Arusha
How many days should I spend in Arusha before or after safari?
One day is the comfortable minimum for a gear check, city orientation, Cultural Heritage Centre visit and a pre-safari briefing. Two days allows for the Arusha National Park half-day and a more relaxed pace.
Is Arusha or Moshi a better base for Kilimanjaro?
Moshi is closer to the mountain (45 minutes vs 90 minutes to the Kili gates) and has a dedicated trekking-town atmosphere. Arusha has more accommodation variety, better restaurants and the Northern Circuit departure options. Most climbers who are also doing a Northern Circuit safari use Arusha as their overall base.
What is Arusha famous for?
The safari capital of Tanzania, gateway to Kilimanjaro, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Also historically significant as the site of the Arusha Declaration (1967, Tanzania’s socialist manifesto), the Arusha Peace Agreement (1993, Rwanda) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
Is Arusha safe?
Generally yes in the main tourist zones. Pickpocketing and bag snatching occur in crowded areas — use a hotel safe for valuables, carry only day essentials when out on foot, and use trusted taxi apps or hotel-arranged transport.
What airport serves Arusha?
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO, 50 km east) for international arrivals and Arusha Airport (ARK, 7 km from city) for domestic and charter flights to the northern parks, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.

Best time to visit Arusha
As Tanzania’s safari capital, Arusha is a transit hub visited year-round. But timing your arrival around the wider Northern Circuit seasonal calendar makes a practical difference.
June to October — Dry season (peak safari season)
The dry season brings the highest concentration of safari-bound travellers through Arusha. Hotels are at their busiest and most expensive, especially August and September. The benefit: every departure to Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire is operating at peak efficiency, guides are in top practice and weather is reliably clear. An Arusha National Park half-day is at its most rewarding.
January to March — Green season (great wildlife, quieter city)
The wildebeest calving season is underway in the Ndutu plains, and Arusha is notably quieter and less expensive than the dry season peak. Hotel rates drop, restaurants are easier to book and the city itself feels less pressured. A very good window to base a safari from Arusha with the northern parks in their green, lush condition.
April to May — Long rains (lowest rates, rain likely)
Arusha itself stays fairly operational but the Northern Circuit parks are in their wet season. Some camps close, others reduce rates significantly. For travellers specifically visiting Arusha and Arusha National Park rather than heading into the deeper Northern Circuit, April and May are quiet and affordable.
Bottom line: Visit Arusha whenever your safari itinerary dictates. The city is a practical hub year-round; the question is which Northern Circuit parks are in peak condition for your dates.
