The Serengeti Migration Safari

The Serengeti Migration Safari

Itineraries can be customised to match your budget and travel dates

The Serengeti Migration Safari is an exceptional experience that takes place in Tanzania, with different stages of the migration occurring throughout the year. The migration is one of the world's most impressive wildlife events, where around 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, elands, gazelles, and predators undertake a perilous journey across the vast savannah.

The migration typically starts in March, when the herds move north from the southern plains of the Serengeti towards the central Seronera region. This is when the wildebeests give birth to their calves, attracting predators like lions, hyenas, and cheetahs. The predators are not the only danger for the herds, as they also face river crossings, where many of them are lost to crocodiles, making this one of the most dangerous stages of the migration.

As the dry season sets in around May and June, the wildebeest and other animals head westwards towards the Grumeti River, where they will have to make another perilous crossing. The Grumeti River crossing is the most exciting part of the migration, with huge crocodiles lurking in the waters, waiting for their prey. In July and August, the herds arrive in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, where they will graze on the lush grasslands until October.

Around October and November, the wildebeest will begin their return journey towards the southern plains of the Serengeti, passing through the Lobo and Loliondo regions of the eastern Serengeti. The migration reaches the southern plains again in December, where it will stay until the cycle starts again in March.

A Serengeti Migration Safari typically lasts from 3 to 5 days, during which you will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will help you navigate the savannah and witness this incredible spectacle of nature. You can also combine your safari with visits to other Tanzanian attractions, such as the Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara.

To make the most of this experience, it's essential to plan ahead and book early, especially during peak season (June to October). You can also choose from a range of accommodation options, from luxury lodges to tented camps, depending on your budget and preferences.

In summary, the Serengeti Migration Safari is an incredible opportunity to witness one of the world's most spectacular wildlife events. With its unique stages, month by month, it is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
