Quick facts
Wildlife
Mikumi's Mkata floodplain supports lion prides, leopard, elephant herds, buffalo, hippo, Burchell's zebra, wildebeest, impala, greater kudu, eland and giraffe. Yellow-throated longclaw, Lilac-breasted roller and a range of raptors make it excellent for birdwatchers. Wild dog passes through the park seasonally on corridor routes to Selous/Nyerere. The park holds a healthy spotted hyena population and African wild cat has been recorded.

About Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s most accessible major park from Dar es Salaam — a 4-hour drive on the Tanzam Highway puts you in the middle of a landscape that many people loosely call the Serengeti of the south. The comparison is fair: the Mkata floodplain at the park’s core is an open savanna almost indistinguishable in character from the Serengeti’s southern plains, with wildebeest, zebra, elephant and lion moving across grassland framed by distant mountains.
Covering 3,230 square kilometres and forming the northern buffer of the greater Selous-Nyerere ecosystem, Mikumi is the gateway to southern Tanzania for most visitors arriving through Dar es Salaam. Many itineraries combine it with Nyerere National Park further south for a full Southern Circuit safari.
Where is Mikumi National Park?
Mikumi lies in the Morogoro Region of eastern Tanzania, bisected by the Tanzam Highway (the main road between Dar es Salaam and Zambia). The park gate is 283 km from Dar es Salaam, and several lodges sit right on the highway, allowing for drive-by game viewing of a sort unusual in Tanzanian parks. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park is an hour’s drive to the west.
Wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain
The Mkata floodplain is the wildlife engine of Mikumi. Between June and October, the flat grassland holds some of the most watchable animal aggregations in southern Tanzania:
- Lion — several well-habituated prides work the floodplain, often resting in open grass that makes them easy to spot.
- Elephant — large breeding herds are regular, often visible right from the road.
- Buffalo — herds of 100–300 animals are common on the open grassland.
- Wildebeest, zebra and impala — the plains support large resident populations.
- Hippo — visible in the pools of the Mkata River from the road.
- Greater kudu — the Vuma Hills in the northwest of the park are excellent for this elegant antelope, which is absent in northern Tanzania’s main parks.
Activities
Game drives
The standard circuit covers the Mkata floodplain (southeast of the main gate), the Hippo Pools, and the Vuma Hills. A full-day drive takes 6–7 hours and covers most of the accessible game viewing territory.
Night game drives
Available through the Vuma Hills Tented Camp concession. Aardvark, honey badger, African civet, spring hare and nocturnal raptors are among the highlights.
Walking safaris
Permitted in designated areas with a TANAPA ranger. Given the proximity of lion and buffalo, this is an experience that concentrates the mind.
Combine Mikumi with…
- Selous / Nyerere National Park — continue south for boat safaris and walking safaris.
- Udzungwa Mountains National Park — hiking and primates an hour west.
- Dar es Salaam — easy weekend return journey.
- Ruaha National Park — a longer western extension.

Is Mikumi safe to drive through?
The Tanzam Highway passes through the park and is generally safe to drive. There are speed limit signs and wildlife crossing warnings — drive slowly, particularly at night.
How long is the drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi?
Approximately 4 hours on a good day. The road is tarmac and well-maintained.
Is Mikumi suitable for a weekend trip from Dar?
It is one of the best weekend safari options from Dar es Salaam. Leave early Saturday, drive into the park by late morning, do an afternoon game drive, stay overnight, do a full Sunday morning drive, and be back in Dar by evening.
Does Mikumi have all the Big Five?
Mikumi has lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo. Black rhino are absent — so it is a Big Four park rather than Big Five.

Best time to visit Mikumi National Park
June to October — Dry season (peak game viewing)
As water sources dry up across the southern highlands, wildlife concentrates on the Mkata floodplain and along the Mikumi River. Lion prides are easier to spot on bare ground, elephant herds are predictable in their movements, and the open vista of the plain at sunrise with wildebeest and zebra silhouetted against Uluguru Mountains is one of southern Tanzania’s great wildlife panoramas. Roads are in their best condition. Book accommodation ahead — Mikumi is popular with Dar es Salaam residents on weekend drives.
November to December — Short rains (green season transition)
The bush greens and migrant birds arrive. Game viewing is still very good on the floodplain as animals adjust to the new season. Fewer visitors than the dry season, and rates at some lodges are lower.
January to March — Wet season (birding and calving)
Some game tracks become muddy and harder to navigate. However, wildebeest calving happens in this period, and the predator activity that surrounds it is dramatic. Bird species richness is at its highest, and the Mkata River attracts thousands of waterbirds. Good value for budget travellers.
April to May — Long rains (quiet period)
The wettest months. Some lodge access roads become impassable and a few smaller properties close. Wildlife disperses across the park. However, the main highway through the park (the Tanzam Road) remains open, and transit game drives are still possible.
Bottom line: June to October for the finest game viewing. Mikumi is good enough in November, December and January for short Dar es Salaam weekend breaks any time outside the long rains.
